Search Continues For Man Who Jumped Into Merrimack River To Avoid Arrest

Multiple authorities are searching the Merrimack River for a carjacking suspect who ran to the river to avoid being arrested, authorities said.

Police responded to a 911 call from a person at a business located on the 800 block of Main Street in Wilmington around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, Wilmington Police report. 

The caller said someone drove to the business and allegedly threatened several employees and told them to get out of their cars, according to police. 

Responding officers found the male suspect in the parking lot of another business. As he tried to drive away, the man rammed into an unmarked police cruiser, police said.

The suspect led police on a chase overnight and was believed to have entered the Merrimack River later Wednesday morning. Several agencies were searching the river all day Wednesday and continued the search the next day.
